This is a concept proposal of a companion 'rover-drone'' for the Curiosity Mars Rover. This solar-powered companion is intended to settle the difficulties of movement in highly rugged terrain by being able to : - perform reconnaissance missions, field markup operations and access places unreachable by Curiosity. - Access high relief and perform a large number of measurements at multiple places in a very short period of time with little energy consumption.

This project is solving the ExoMars Rover is My Robot challenge.

Description

Compartmented into two pieces. A rover base and mini UAV able to detach from its base, Hegemony is equipped with sensors, cameras, GPS and radio transmission capabilities.

3 Mission Scenarios/ Hegemony Rover-drone support:

-- Curiosity wants to secure his way to get to a point located at a distance X. The drone deploys and fly over the field to the distance X. During the trip, he makes field markups , takes pictures and records geographical data of sensitive areas. Then transmit it to Curiosity center for analysis to facilitate his decision making process.

-- It can not access a high relief. Hegemony deploys and flies up to the top to take pictures and performs air and soil measurements.

-- Curiosity is blocked and no longer have movement options. He performs a backup of its key data to Hegemony. Continue the mission

Key Tech specs:

The rover:

The mini rover is the base station of the mini drone. It is to be equipped with - Solar powered batteries - GPS - Soil sensors (ph, humidity) - temperature sensors - radio transmission capabilities - Data Storage capabilities

The mini drone:

The mini UAV is a solar powered quadcopter equipped with:

  • GPS
  • Air sensors (humidity, temperature, CO2)
  • Cameras at the forefront and at the back of the UAV
  • Solar Panels
  • Solar powered batteries
  • radio transmission capabilities
  • Data Storage capabilities
