urbansim-integration-with-datagov-

Online platform integrating climate and flooding data and prognosis with open source urban development simulation system UrbanSim. Policy makers of coastal communities could use it to establish a timeline for rezoning, infrastructure developments and policy changes for gradual accomodation of land loss due to rising water levels and changes in flooding patterns. Community members could use the tool to help them make decisions about business or residence locations.

This project is solving the Coastal Inundation in Your Community challenge.

Description

UrbanSim is an open source urban development simulation system. It is most widely used tool for land use and transportation planning and modeling by planning agencies. Online access to the UrbanSim platform, with simplified interface and model setup to use climate and flooding data and prognosis from http://www.data.gov/climate/, would provide a useful tool for policy makers and members of coastal communities. Local goverments could use it to establish a timeline for rezoning, infrastructure developments and policy changes for gradual accomodation of land loss due to rising water levels and changes in flooding patterns. Community members could use the tool to help them make decisions about business or residence locations. Minimum information about the user (income bracket/ family size etc) can be used to calibrate models used by UrbanSim engine. Moreover, the data about locations researched by the community members can be used to further influence decisions made by the policymakers,
