The overview effect, APPttraction
By Léon Wennekes (www.officeforimagination.com).
Challenge: To combine the mesmerizing experience of the 'overview effect' with information about personal environment changes. Done on a location (travelling exhibition) and in combination with NASA visualized data and the 'internet' (apps)., hence the word: Appttraction..;) This in order to create the following result for the general public: deeply felt awareness of the necessity to save our earth from pollution, greenhouse effect, deforestation and so on. And 'last but not least' to stimulate the necessity to explore new frontiers in space.
REMARK: This experience can also be realised by using the OCULUS RIFT VR Glasses to simulate the 'overview effect' (much cheaper than a 8K dome projection..;)
Background of the challenge : (see also http://vimeo.com/55073825 Astronauts who look to our homeplanet from outer space, experience an immense 'cognitive shift': they suddently become aware of this beautiful, blue, vulnerable, spaceship Earth, with this paperthin layer of protecting atmosphere around it. Sometimes it is experienced as an almost religious experience.. Big data is only interesting for the general public when it is understandable and visualized in such a way that it reaches the mind easily. After exeriencing this 'overview effect' the minds and spirits will open for this new information: as a result the info will easily be adapted and the urgency directly 'hits' the human emotional system. An interesting and emotional story about your own living environment based upon the big data visual information from NASA.
Experience: Every 15 minutes a small group of people (max 10) experience a 'outer space experience' by hoovering (floating construction) over a giant halfdome of the earth with super high resolution projection (8K) of the view you have from the international space station. (Or as a group use the OCULUS RIFT). Their trip finally ends precisely above the spot of the travelling exhibition (= the living area of this audience). There they see in projection animated and carefully selected visual data of great impact: PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE (the latter is animation) of their own living spot. They see how over time their living area is affected by human activity. (This data is a combined and edited 'near realtime' footage of NASA). The audience will directly feel and experience the impact on their own living space.
Back 'on earth' they download the APP with the visualized and animated information of their personal living space, in past present.. and future.... That is the future with no changes in human 'environmental behaviour'. So in the same APP info, clues and solutions on personal behavior and actions will be given to change the situation.
I look for support and people who want to help me with this idea, to develop it, to improve it, to realize it... Thanks: Léon Wennekes ([email protected])
