the-next-step

Our project aims to provide a new concept for asteroid belt exploration. Looking at the previous asteroid mission, each of them visited at most 2 asteroids, ; hence we have thought of a brand new kind of exploration based on more than just a single satellite (such as DAWN was). Starting from this one, we could redesign it in order to achieve 3-4 smaller probe with the same total amount of weight, So, with the same launcher we could send a "swarm" of probes each with a different target asteroid.

This project is solving the Create Your Own Asteroid Mission challenge.

Description

Our project aims to provide a new concept for asteroid belt exploration. Looking at the previous asteroid mission each of them visited at most 2 asteroids, ; hence we have thought of a brand new kind of exploration based on more than just a single satellite (such as DAWN was). Starting from this one we could redesign it in order to achieve 3-4 smaller probe with the same total amount of weight, So with the same launcher in the same mission, we could send a "swarm" of probes each with a different target asteroid. This could lead to a mission cost reduction, an improvement of our knowledge of the asteroid belt in terms of 3D mapping, soil and nucleous composition and more reliability for using smaller and simpler spacecraft.
