safari-apophis-20

The goal is to change the orbit of potentially hazardous asteroids and study the possibility of setting it in a new orbit around the Earth or the Moon. We developed a web that can place and keep 5 gyroscopes in the surface of an asteroid, using it we can take control of the rotation, enabling us to use the Yarkovsky effect in our favor. Extra instruments will be used to enhance our data about the asteroid (albedo, composition, etc) improving our knowledge of the materials for mining.

This project is solving the Safari Apophis challenge.

Description

The goal of our project is to change the orbit of potentially hazardous asteroids and study the possibility of setting a new orbit around the Earth or the Moon for mining. We developed a design of web that can place and keep a number of gyroscopes and other instruments in the surface of an asteroid. These gyroscopes can take control of the rotation of Apophis enabling us to use the Yarkovsky effect in our favor. The other instruments will be used to enhance our data about the asteroid (albedo, composition, etc) allowing us to have a better control of the asteroid and improving our knowledge of the materials for mining.
