halleys-hitchhikers

Utilizing the Leap Motion hardware Halley's Hitchhikers is a 3D Visualization platform that allows users to navigate the solar system. You can rotate and zoom in all directions using your hands floating over the keyboard. Gestures of pointing allows you to select asteroids and planets and zoom in for a 360 degree view of the chosen objects. Grabbing data from Nasa's near Earth object program, we are rendering the asteroids accurately in distance and estimated size.

This project is solving the Asteroid Imagery Sharing challenge.

Description

Our project hopes to excite and educate people of all ages by showing the actual data for detectable asteroids. As more data becomes available the objects, images, speeds and relative location will automatically populate. By allowing users to grab and rotate asteroids, we hope to increase interest and demonstrate data being obtained by all sources in a easily understandable manner. Keeping the platform as abstract as possible, we are hoping that educational platforms of any ilk could utilize our interface to create relative(conceptually or geographically) items online.
