Our project is to allow the public to visualize the size and composition of asteroids by comparing them to everyday objects that they are used to. By allowing users to enter custom objects and minimal information we allow them to compare these objects to asteroids to understand more about asteroids. This framework allows for easy scalability for all types of data comparisons. As more information comes available we will be able to compare more objects to various characteristics of asteroids.

This project is solving the Visualize the Asteroid Skies challenge.

Description

Our project is to allow the public to visualize the size and composition of asteroids by comparing them to everyday objects that they are used to. By allowing users to enter custom objects and minimal information we allow them to compare these objects to asteroids to understand more about asteroids. This framework allows for easy scalability for all types of data comparisons. As more information comes available we will be able to compare more objects to various characteristics of asteroids. Currently we allow for comparisons to diameter, circumference, and composition. For the first two comparisons we allow a user to enter in an object, a length, and a measurement. Then we compute the amount of objects that it would take to circle or go right through the asteroid. For the composition calculation, we ask for an object, allow to select from different types of materials found in asteroids and let you know how much of that object can be created from the asteroid.

Our goal was to have the public start thinking of asteroids in terms that they could understand. By comparing something they can't see to an everyday object they can start to comprehend the size and importance of these objects that float around our solar system.
