on-my-earth

This app displays NASA's Earth as Art images in a Lightbox. This way, the user is able to select images that are interesting to them and bring up a Lightbox window where it tells where the NASA satellite image was taken, and show the juxtaposition of the satellite image with the Google Maps satellite image of that location.

This project is solving the Earth As Art challenge.

Description

This project is a simple way of displaying some of the beautiful images that our satellites capture, as well as the images that are more familiar to us us Earthlings, Google Maps satellite view. Users are able to see a gallery of the NASA Earth as Art images, and touch the images to open a Lightbox window that tells where the image was taken, and juxtaposes the NASA image with an embedded Google Map of the area. In the future another feature will be added, where the user is able to select their favorite images and create an album of those pictures to download to their phone and/or share to their social media. There will be a database of these beautiful satellite images that can expand and be updated, so that the content is dynamic.

The idea behind this project is simply to expose average, ordinary Earthlings to the beautiful parts of the Earth's terrain and weather that can only be seen from space. Astronaut Douglas Wheelock described the feeling he had looking back at Earth from space as incredibly emotional, truly giving the feeling of global unity. This app will spark interest on Earth to explore the world, seeing the beautiful things.
